CURRENT EXHIBIT
SLIDING THROUGH TIME
Carla Valentino's mixed media series, "Sliding Through Time," integrates now-obsolete carousel slides—a significant part of her 1970s school years. Each multi-layered monoprint depicts a time-related concept, often incorporating images of timepieces. Several larger works predating this collection also explore the passage of time.
Valentino's introduction to college-level art history was through the carousel projector and slides, which also served as the medium through which her parents shared their European travels. The distinct sound of each slide advancing and the flash of light between images in a darkened, theater-like room are vivid memories. Though now a relic, the carousel slide projector endures as a form of time travel, once cutting-edge technology that opened up the world of art to her.
Opening Reception: August 7th | 5:30 - 8:00pm
On View: August 7 - September 30
About the Artist:
Carla Valentino is a mixed media artist and art educator based at the New Jersey Shore. Originally trained as a painter, her practice has evolved to encompass a wide range of materials, including paper, ink, graphite, found and recycled objects, and printmaking techniques. Most recently, monoprinting has become a significant influence in her mixed media work.
Carla holds a B.A. in Studio Art with a concentration in Art History from Georgian Court University, and has pursued graduate studies in Art Education at both New Jersey City University and Monmouth University. With over 24 years of experience as a high school fine arts teacher, she also leads local mixed media workshops for adults. An active member of several regional art associations, Carla regularly exhibits her work in group and solo shows throughout the area.
