Jenn Hampton

Arts Ambassador Award

Jenn Hampton is an arts and experience curator. She is the part owner and co-director and curator of Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park, NJ, as well as the curator and creator of the Wooden Walls Public Art Project on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. Jenn was also one of the founding creatives behind the concept of the Original Asbury Lanes.

Jenn attended the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she studied printmaking and theater arts. She spent many years pursuing acting, art and documentary film production after college. Her acting pursuits led her to move to New Jersey in 2000. She relocated to Asbury Park to help create and build Asbury Lanes. In the eleven years at Asbury Lanes, Jenn helped to create a national and international fan base of performers, bands and burlesque acts, in addition to creating an innovative gallery program that focused on young art collectors. The success of Asbury Lanes helped to create a destination in Asbury Park for music lovers, artists, and performers from all over the country.

Parlor Gallery is located in Asbury Park and has been open since 2009. We curate 10-12 exhibitions a year, in addition to exhibiting at art fairs in NYC and Miami. In addition to her curation at Parlor Gallery and at the former Asbury Lanes, she has curated exhibitions for museums, galleries, and alternative spaces.

Jenn is currently working with Madison Marquette, one of the lead developers in Asbury Park, to create a public arts program that showcases murals and public art on the Asbury Park Boardwalk called the Wooden Walls Project. This project, in its fourth year, has seen the creation of 35 public works of art, including 30 murals, 1 large-scale art installation and 2 sculptural projects.

Mil Wexler

Community Service Award

Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Mil came to the United States as a young girl. She grew up in Westfield, New Jersey. While still in high school, she attended classes at The Art Students League, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and the New School of Social Research. After graduation from high school, she returned to Amsterdam as an apprentice to the artist Jos Rovers. He taught her how to draw, paint, live and breathe art. Rovers learned from his father, a Belgian painter, how to grind his own oil paints, tempra, and other traditional ways which he then passed on to Mil. During this time, Mil also attended classes at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam. After spending the summer of ’73 in Ein Hod, an artist village in Israel, Mil ended up living in Israel for nearly three years.

Israel is where she became involved in her ongoing study of ceramics. She became a ceramic painter for Lapid Ceramic Studios in Yafo Israel. Returning to New Jersey, Mil taught painting in her own studio while attending classes at Brookdale College for independent studies in ceramics. She also attended classes at the “old” Thompson Park when they still had the gas kiln. Mil has also attended various seminars around the U.S. taught by leading ceramic artists of our time. Eventually, Mil taught classes at Thompson Park, and reinstated the Raku classes, a special technique of firing clay. Mil has taught Ceramics and Art Appreciation classes at Monmouth University and is currently teaching Ceramics and Painting in her studio in Colts Neck, New Jersey and at the Art Alliance in Red Bank, New Jersey.
