  • Creative Aging | Monmouth Arts

The goal of the Creative Aging program is to bring the transformative power of the arts to our senior community. Through the program, teaching artists deliver free visual arts activities to seniors at Monmouth County community organizations. CREATIVE AGING In 2023 Monmouth Arts launched our Creative Aging Program, with the goal of bringing the transformative power of the arts to our senior community. Through the program, teaching artists deliver free visual arts activities once a week for six to eight weeks to seniors at Monmouth County community organizations. We recognize a pressing need to connect with and value the voices of older adults. Even in the absence of a pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 25% of U.S. adults aged 65 and over experience social isolation. Of them, 43% report that they feel lonely on a regular basis. The program’s therapeutic activities focus on giving each participant the feeling of success and purpose, with enhanced mental, emotional, and physical well-being. The activities are complimented by guest facilitators, including mental health professionals. Since we began this program, Monmouth Arts provided visual arts activities to older adults at senior centers in Red Bank, Long Branch, Eatontown, Keyport, and Asbury Park. Monmouth Arts is working to expand this program to more seniors and centers in 2025. For additional information, please contact Connie Isbell, Director of Membership & Community Engagement at connie@monmoutharts.org or 732.212.1890 ext. 101. The development of this program was made possible in 2023 by funding from the Creative Aging Initiative of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Monmouth Arts is grateful for the additional support it continues to receive from funders.

These artists were curated based on the recommendation of a panel of jurors who reviewed the work prior to the August exhibit. "In Search of Meaning" aptly names the driving force behind the works of Gwynneth Green and Lou Storey. Each in their own way, Green through poetry, prose and photography, and Storey through words and paintings, intend to communicate personal and universal truths through their individual art forms. In Green’s photo musings printed on metal plates, words are subtly melded into the photograph’s image, allowing the viewer a moment of discovery when the narrative reveals itself. Similarly in Storey’s paintings, words are used as catalyst for the viewer to find meaning through the use of color, pattern, and hand-built dimensional elements. Lou Storey "Two Atoms, Two Adams" acrylic on homosote panel, cast resin shapes, 22" x 15" $60 Gwynneth Green "benched emotions" photo-musings printed on metal 11" x 17" $110 Lou Storey "Duck and Cover" acrylic paint on wood, cast resin shapes 12" x 15" $40 Gwynneth Green "angler’s realm" photo-musings printed on metal 12" x 8" $75 Lou Storey "A Wheel in a Wheel" acrylic on wood, cast resin shapes 17" x 13" $50 Gwynneth Green "aspirations rise" photo-musings printed on metal 11" x 17" $110 Lou Storey "The Hunt" acrylic on wood, cast resin shapes 14" x 14" $40 Gwynneth Green "laid silent" photo-musings printed on metal 8" x 12" $75 Lou Storey "And Yours Will Too" acrylic on wood, cast resin shapes 14" x 17" $50 Gwynneth Green "broken" photo-musings printed on metal 8" x 12" $75 Gwynneth Green uses the camera and the written word to create Photo Musings, merging text within image inviting the viewer closer inspection that provides a moment of discovery. Her artwork has been exhibited in the mid-Atlantic region as well as in virtual exhibitions. A published poet with thirteen publications, she currently lives in Little Silver. Lou Storey uses dimensional hand-built shapes and bright polychrome patterns in his paintings that illustrate concepts, thoughts and feelings; a visual form of storytelling. The 2026 Monmouth Arts Teen Arts Festival, presented with Monmouth NJ 250, embraces the theme “Art Is Revolutionary.” As we reflect on 250 years of change, the festival celebrates creativity as a catalyst for progress and connection. We invite teaching artists to design workshops that inspire teens to think boldly, experiment freely, and explore how art can spark dialogue and transformation. We are looking for several workshops to carry out this theme in a variety of innovative and engaging ways for students aged 13-19. Please note, however, that to be considered proposals do not need to cater to the theme. We expect many of our workshops and masterclasses to be non-thematic. If you or your organization is interested in submitting a workshop proposal, please fill out the Workshop Proposal Form by clicking the button below. Proposals will be reviewed as they come in and artists will be contacted as soon as possible to confirm acceptance. Workshop proposals are due February 2, 2026. The photos here were taken in February of 2017, less than a month after the presidential inauguration. The images should encourage viewers to consider both how quickly the past two years have gone by and how much or how little progress has been made.
