Human Thread Exhibit Sends Powerful Message on Collective Strength

Monmouth Arts, in partnership with The Caroline Huber Wellness Center at Brookdale Community College, recently welcomed visitors to a special exhibition at the Center celebrating two of the College’s guiding values: compassion and courage. The exhibition and opening reception drew a strong turnout of students, faculty, staff, artists, and community members, creating an evening of reflection, conversation, and connection centered on the transformative power of art.

The exhibition, Human Thread: The Art of Compassion and Courage, highlights Brookdale’s commitment to removing barriers, leading with empathy, and creating opportunities for all learners. Through a diverse collection of artworks, 45 participating artists explored themes of resilience, human dignity, solidarity, and hope, offering viewers a visual experience that resonated deeply with the exhibition’s central message.

Guests at the opening reception engaged with the artwork and one another in a welcoming environment that encouraged dialogue about the challenges and triumphs of the human experience. The event celebrated the artists whose work brought the Human Thread theme to life and underscored the role that creative expression can play in fostering understanding and strengthening community bonds.

Artist statements displayed alongside each piece provided context and insight. By acknowledging the painful, often overlooked challenges of life, art serves as a reminder that everyone carries a unique ability to persevere in the face of adversity.

Guests were also treated to a powerful site-specific dance by In Good Company Dance, accompanied by musician Martin Howth. The dynamic performance united attendees and brought the reception to life through dance, music, motion, and sound. Co-founded by Meredith Koloski, In Good Company Dance is a women-led, grassroots organization dedicated to sharing dance and giving back to local communities. The group creates thought provoking performances, classes, and workshops to foster personal growth and empowerment.

The success of the exhibition opening demonstrated the community’s enthusiasm for conversations around compassion, courage, and collective care. Attendees responded positively to the emotional depth of the artwork, making the reception a memorable and meaningful gathering that reflected Brookdale’s values in action and Monmouth Arts’ commitment to fostering artists and advancing the arts throughout Monmouth County.

"Partnering with Monmouth Arts has been a wonderful opportunity to reenvision what is possible with the space of the wellness center," says Summer Deaver, the Center's director. "Monmouth Arts has brought new awareness and inspiration to the work of both organizations. This show is a celebration of the new values the college adopted last year, and the work brings a human element to the efforts of nonprofits in Monmouth County."

Human Thread remains on view at the Caroline Huber Wellness Center through August 10th, weekdays from 8:30-4:30. Visitors are encouraged to experience the collection firsthand and explore the many ways the featured artists examine compassion and courage through their work, reminding us that empathy, resilience, and creativity continue to be among our most powerful tools for building a stronger community.
