Monmouth Arts' Gala: The Art of the Impossible featured an evening was full of mystery, illusion, and spotlighting the honorees that included Kevin Smith, Pat Battles, Ming Chen, and more! Thank you for supporting Monmouth Arts After Dark: The Art of the Impossible! The evening was full of mystery, illusion, and a whole lot of hocus-pocus! The Wonder Bar was packed for Pam Flores' performance at the VIP Smoke & Mirrors reception. Brandon Williams' sleight of hand enchanted attendees, and Monmouth Arts Board President Luke Breslin raised a toast with the perfect Dark N' Stormy cocktail. The night continued at McLoone's Supper Club, where VJ Atom Worth's audio and visual art captivated the audience, along with illusionist Jeanette Andrews , who delivered an interactive performance that amazed the sold-out crowd. We're so grateful to all the amazing sponsors , donors , and journal advertisers who supported us and made our event a huge success! We want to give a special shout-out to Hatteras for their generous donation of the printing of the ad journal. DONATE MEET THE HONOREES kevin smith Kevin Smith Artistic Achievement Aw ard - Excellence in the Arts Kevin Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy buddy film Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob. Clerks won the "Award of the Youth" and the "Mercedes-Benz Award" at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, the "Filmmakers Trophy" at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards (Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay and Jeff Anderson for Best Debut Performance). Jay and Silent Bob also appeared in Smith's later films Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which are set primarily in his home state of New Jersey. While not strictly sequential, the films have crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon known as the "View Askewniverse", named after Smith's production company View Askew Productions, which he co-founded with Scott Mosier. Since 2011, Smith has mostly made horror films, including Red State (2011) and the "comedy horror films" Tusk (2014) and Yoga Hosers (2016), two in a planned series of three such films set in Canada dubbed the True North trilogy. Smith also executive produces Masters of the Universe: Revelation for Netflix and last year released the highly anticipated Clerks III from Lionsgate which also included a 50+ city theater screening and Q&A tour. Smith owns Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey, a comic bookstore which became the setting for the reality television show Comic Book Men (2012—2018). Last year, he expanded his business empire by opening Smodcastle Cinemas, a movie theater in New Jersey. As a podcaster, Smith co-hosts several shows on his SModcast Podcast Network, including SModcast, Fatman Beyond, and the live show Hollywood Babble-On. He is known for participating in long, humorous Q&A sessions that are often filmed for DVD release, beginning with An Evening with Kevin Smith. Pat Battle Pat Battle Artistic Achievement Award - Journalism Pat Battle is the co-anchor for NBC 4 New York’s “Weekend Today in New York” which airs Saturday mornings between 6:00 A.M. – 7:00 A.M. and 9:00 A.M. – 10:00 A.M. and on Sunday mornings between 6:00 A.M. – 8:30 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. Battle also serves as the station’s senior New Jersey correspondent. As part of NBC 4’s team-coverage of Hurricane Sandy, she won a National Emmy® and Edward R. Murrow award. Battle’s reporting and anchoring was also a key component of NBC 4 New York’s award-winning COVID-19 coverage, honored in January, 2021 with the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for “creat(ing) a 360 view in real time of the coronavirus pandemic, with courageous and thorough reporting on the virus’s explosion in New York City.” The duPont has long been recognized as the broadcast, documentary and on-line equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, also awarded by Columbia University. Pat joined NBC 4 New York in April 1996 from WCBS-TV, where for three and a half years, she was a general assignment reporter handling breaking news stories in the tri-state area. Her work earned her recognition as one of the best live reporters in the region. Her efforts have been recognized by dozens of organizations -- from the Jackie Robinson Cultural Center to the Girl Scouts of America. Among other honors, Battle has won two New York Emmy awards for her work in television news. She was recogni zed in 2008 by the McDonald’s Corporation as a Broadcast Legend in the fast food company's Faces of Black History Campaign. In the fall of 2010, Pat was diagnosed with breast cancer -- ductal carcinoma in situ -- and underwent surgery to remove the malignant cells from her right breast. She documented her personal journey, and in yet another public service, broadcast her story on "News 4 New York" at the close of Breast Cancer Awareness Month that October. Her story, and an hour-long special, "Talk for a Cure," aired the following day on "Weekend Today in New York," earned two New York Emmy nominations. Born and raised on the Jersey Shore, Battle graduated from the University of Maryland’s School of Journalism in College Park. She is married and has three children. Ming Chen Tim Donnelly Debbie DeLisa Ming Chen Maverick Award Ming Chen is a podcaster, graphic designer, entrepreneur and reality TV cast member most known for the AMC TV show Comic Book Men. While in college at the University of Michigan, he met filmmaker Kevin Smith when he developed a fan website based on the movie Clerks. Smith, who appreciated Chen’s work, reached out and asked him to create the Web site for his production company, View Askew Productions. Twenty-Six years later, Chen continues to work on many of Smith’s online projects and ventured into several other areas within the Kevin Smith empire, most recently hosting a weekly podcast called I Sell Comics! on Smith’s podcast network, SModCo. During his free time, Chen serves on the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County and the Garden State Film Festival board. He also co-owns a podcast studio called “A Shared Universe” and is a partner in a coffee, gaming and comics café called “Coral Sword” in Houston, Texas, with former major league ballplayer Hunter Pence. Chen has been married to his wife Debbie for 20 years and has two children, Lillian and Harrison, a dog named Joy and a cat named Scallion. Debbie DeLisa business leadership award Debbie DeLisa, a native of the Jersey Shore, is well-known in the Asbury Park community for managing the iconic Wonder Bar for twenty years. Her friendly demeanor has made her a beloved figure in the area. Her experiences as a flight attendant and studying abroad inspired her to believe in the power of people to make a difference in their communities. Along with the support of her former boyfriend Lance Larson, a musical legend in Asbury Park, together they purchased the abandoned Wonder Bar building in 2002 and re-opened it that same year. Several years later, Lance and Debbie sold Wonder Bar and Debbie remained on as the manager. The Wonder Bar, known for its live music and colorful paint job, is all about having fun. As the acting manager of Wonder Bar, Debbie has brought talented musicians to the intimate stage including longtime friend and legendary musician Bruce Springsteen. In addition to Bruce, many other wonderful musicians and actors have performed at The Wonder Bar but one of her favorites is Vincent Pastore, past recipient of Monmouth Arts Artistic Achievement Award and fellow advocate for animal rescue centers and veterans. Thanks to the generosity of Madison Marquette, who encourages her to use the club for benefits, she has been recognized for numerous charitable endeavors for people and animals. Wonder Bar is not only known for its tunes and tiki bar but also the world-famous Yappy Hour which was founded 16 years ago. Debbie's vision was and still is to raise money for dog rescue charities and also create a safe, and social place to bring your dog. Tim Donnelly illuminator award Tim Donnelly got his start in music in 1991, working on the inaugural Lollapalooza festival for the Surfrider Foundation. As a writer, he worked for MTV, Surfing Magazine, and Relix Magazine, which led to working with his pal Danny Clinch on several music documentaries, including films on Pearl Jam and Bonnaroo. A move to Asbury Park 13 years ago led to producing events on the Asbury Park Boardwalk, including a pop-up gallery featuring local bands and surfing-related artists, he called Sea.Hear.Now. After Superstorm Sandy, he rebuilt the dunes on the north and south end of Asbury Park and co-produced a relief concert called “On The Beach” to get Jersey Shore families back into their homes. He’s been the Producer of the Asbury Park Music + Film Festival since its inception and is a founding partner of one of the world’s most unique surfing contests, " The Cold War." He and his partners HM Wollman and Clinch formed Between The Sets and teamed with C3 Presents to take Sea.Hear.Now from a boardwalk bash to an international music and arts festival on the Asbury Park beach. Their formula of having old and new friends play music, make art, and surf for a September weekend has struck a chord with fans and the industry alike. Since the festival's launch, Sea.Hear.Now has been nominated for a mid-sized festival of the year and named the most environmentally sustainable festival in the United States; more importantly, it has been a positive impact on the Asbury Park community, helping community-based non-profits. Impact 100 Impact 100 Jersey Coast community service award Impact 100 Jersey Coast is an all-volunteer women's collective that funds high-impact grants to strengthen nonprofits addressing the unmet needs of underserved populations in Monmouth County. The giving circle includes women of different ages and backgrounds who combine their charitable dollars, experience, and energy to make a tangible difference in their community. Part of a rapidly growing network of Impact 100 chapters throughout the world, Impact 100 Jersey Coast was founded in 2015 and has since awarded more than $2.4 million in funding to 28 local nonprofits. This unique grantmaking collaborative continues to diversify its membership to ensure that it encompasses the richness of ideas, perspectives, and the participation of women representative of the broad diversity of our community; to provide a forum that helps raise awareness of the needs of underserved populations, as well as the systemic inequities so often at the root of those needs, and actively pursue ways to best support and partner with nonprofit organizations, while empowering its members to improve lives through philanthropy. Brandon has been practicing and performing magic since the age of four. He has worked and consulted for some of the largest names in magic and entertainment. He has garnered worldwide recognition amongst fellow magicians, A-list actors and Fortune 500 companies. Brandon has gained a deep understanding of the art with well over fifty original effects, including his famous Tear Change (voted "Best Trick" at Magic Live 2018); Brandon's audiences have the pleasure of seeing magic that is fresh and one-of-a-kind. Atom Worth Video DJ & Filmmak er A Monmouth County native, a Dj who has spent the last ten years DJ’ing in Asbury Park via Dj residencies at Porta, the Asbury Hotel, House of Independents, and the Asbury Park Yacht Club, among many others. Atom has contributed to the recent resurgence in popularity of his hometown of Asbury Park. His unique style of ‘visual turntablism’ combines a live visual element with traditional music mixing. At the same time, Atom is also an accomplished filmmaker. Atom has won 5 New York Emmys, creating video content for networks and brands, among 14 nominations. He’s won in the categories of Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, & Outstanding Video Journalism. Atom has directed documentary films on insulin affordability, Superstorm Sandy, and 9/11 and created content for A&E, MSNBC, and more. Pamela Flores Singer & Songwriter Pamela Flores is an acclaimed singer-songwriter from Asbury Park, known for her soulful melodies and introspective lyrics. The students of the Boys & Girls Club of Red Bank created these signs to express the positive messages they'd like to see in their community. This project is a collaboration between the Boys & Girls Club of Red Bank and Monmouth Arts. Major funding has been provided by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, with support from the Provident Bank Foundation. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County empowers all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. In Search of Meaning Gwynneth Green and Lou Storey Exhibit: March 8 - May 7, 2021 In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, that resulted in the postponement of our ArtSpace 105 micro-gallery exhibits, we invite the arts community to view work at our all-new Digital Gallery! "In Search of Meaning" aptly names the driving force behind the works of Gwynneth Green and Lou Storey. Each in their own way, Green through poetry, prose and photography, and Storey through words and paintings, intend to communicate personal and universal truths through their individual art forms. In Green’s photo musings printed on metal plates, words are subtly melded into the photograph’s image, allowing the viewer a moment of discovery when the narrative reveals itself. Similarly in Storey’s paintings, words are used as catalyst for the viewer to find meaning through the use of color, pattern, and hand-built dimensional elements. Her artwork has been exhibited in the mid-Atlantic region as well as in virtual exhibitions. A published poet with thirteen publications, she currently lives in Little Silver. Lou Storey uses dimensional hand-built shapes and bright polychrome patterns in his paintings that illustrate concepts, thoughts and feelings; a visual form of storytelling. A graduate of Pratt Institute MFA in fine arts, he has exhibited his artwork nationally for over thirty years. He lives in Long Branch with his husband Steve and works as a psychotherapist in Red Bank.

The Monmouth County Senior Art Contest & Exhibition aims to display and elevate best work of talented Monmouth County senior artists. To be eligible for this exhibition, you must: Be a visual artist, professional or non-professional, age 60 or older Currently reside in Monmouth County Submit ONE piece of original artwork completed in the last three years Submit a piece that has not previously been submitted to a county Senior Citizen Art Show or the New Jersey State Senior Citizens Annual Juried Art Contest & Exhibition Please note: This county senior art show does not accept nudes because the exhibition space is also used for public lectures and children’s classes. Artist Classification Professional: Person who meets 2 or more of the following criteria: Sells or has sold artwork through commercial channels (galleries, online galleries, craft shows, etc.) Exhibited in a professional gallery and/or in professional shows for 2+ years* Had artwork selected in 2 or more juried art or craft shows* Has received 2 or more awards for artwork* Holds (or has held) professional membership in art guilds or associations Must list 2 criteria on the application * Exception: These criteria do not apply to artists who only enter their county show and never exhibit artwork in any other show—unless they have won First Place in their category three or more times. In that case, the artist should identify themselves as a Professional. Non-Professional: Person who does NOT meet the above professional criteria. Categories Acrylic Craft : One-of-a-kind originals only; no craft kits or molds. Digital/Computer Art : Artwork created using a computer-based program, such as Photoshop or Illustrator; this category does NOT include digital photographs. Mixed Media : Artwork that combines two or more media AND where no one medium clearly dominates. This category includes collage and assemblage, but does NOT include watercolor paintings that use graphite/ink drawing. Oil Pastel : Includes chalk and oil pastel. Photography : Includes color, black & white or tinted photographs taken with a film-based or digital camera. Print : Original prints only; includes all print forms, such as etching, engraving, linoleum, woodcut, lithograph, monoprint, silkscreen, etc. Sculpture : work designed in 3-dimensions, carved or constructed in any medium, abstract or figurative. Watercolor : Includes watercolor, gouache, and tempera. Works on Paper : Includes hand-drawn work in mediums including: charcoal, pencil, colored pencil, graphite, ink, pen, crayon, or stylus of any sort. Artwork Display Rules Each artist may only submit one entry. Artwork must be the original creation of the artist. Original versions of the artwork must be exhibited; no gicl.e prints or other reproductions accepted. 2-D dimensions for hanging artwork, photographs, crafts, etc.—INCLUDING THE FRAME AND MAT —may be no more than 30” and no less than 10” in any dimension. 3-D dimensions for sculpture and 3-D crafts—INCLUDING ANY BASE —may not exceed 20” and 36" in height and may not weigh more than 30 pounds. All 2-D artwork must be delivered READY TO HANG: matted, framed, and wired (no saw-tooth hangers). Paintings may be framed, but it is not necessary; however, paintings must be wired properly. Use screw eyes for all wiring. All 2-D artwork should be protected where necessary with Plexiglas or mylar. Plexiglas, not glass, is strongly recommended for 2-D work to avoid damage to artwork. Plexiglas is required for any 2-D work over 24” in any dimension. Artworks need to be properly labeled on the back, bottom right for 2-D works and lightly attached to 3-D works. Labels will be provided ahead of time and should be properly labeled prior to drop off. Any artwork with a dollar value exceeding $400 must be privately insured by the artist—either through their homeowner’s or rental insurance or through an art rider. We do not provide insurance. If artwork is incorrectly categorized, it will be moved to the correct category. Work does not need to be for sale but an insurance value is required. If a work is offered for sale, the artist receives the full payment and is responsible for any taxes associated with the sale of the artwork. No artwork may be removed prior to the closing date, August 30. Only the county coordinator may remove artwork from the exhibiting space. Monmouth Arts will retain those artworks selected for the state show, unless display requirements for the state show are not met. In that case, Monmouth Arts will contact the artist to make hanging changes to the piece to prepare the work for the state show. Artwork not selected for the state show must be retrieved by the artist directly from the Manalapan Library on September 3rd. Waiver: Monmouth Arts and Monmouth County Library Headquarters will make every attempt to secure and protect each entry submitted. The sponsoring organizations do not assume responsibility for loss or damage incurred to any artwork. Entry in the show signifies compliance with this waiver. Each artist assumes full responsibility for their own artwork at all times. Judging: Three unaffiliated judges chosen by Monmouth Arts may select one professional winner and one non-professional winner in each category, along with a 2nd and 3rd place winner when possible. There will also be one professional and one nonprofessional Best in Show. First-place winners in Monmouth County in both professional and non-professional levels across 11 categories automatically advance to the state competition. Registration and Drop-off/Pick-up Completed application form must be received by Monmouth Arts by July 18, 2025. Artwork must be delivered to the Monmouth County Library Headquarters on July 28th, 2025 between 9:30am – 12:30pm. See timeline for other dates and information. All first-place winners will not need to pick up their artwork on September 3rd from the library. Monmouth Arts will collect and transport first-place artworks to the state show. All other art must be picked up from the library on September 3rd from 10 AM - 2 PM. The Monmouth Arts Education Awards is a distinguished annual event held to honor and acknowledge the power of arts education in Monmouth County. Each year, we open applications for community members to nominate arts educators and champions who embody what it means to enhance, teach, and advocate for arts education in Monmouth County. The Arts Education Awards is a distinguished annual event held by Monmouth Arts to honor and acknowledge the power of arts education in our community. 2026 Arts Education Awards Honorees Photo from left to right: Louise Millmann, Roy Gussman, Meaghan McDavitt, Lisa Bagwell, Maggie Fischer, Arts Director at the Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center Community Champion of Arts Education Award (Individual) Louise Millmann Louise has been teaching photography and Advanced Placement experimental digital design classes for the past thirty four years in both the Northport and Jericho school districts on Long Island. She received a four-year full tuition photography scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in NYC where she received her BFA in photography then completed her MFA during her teaching career. She has taught specialized classes in mixed media digital photography at the New School, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Modern Art. After retirement from public school, she moved full time to Bradley Beach and began teaching Gelli Plate and collage classes at ArtSpace by Monmouth Arts, the Asbury Art Club, Over the Moon Art Studios and the Belmar Art Council . Louise is looking forward to offering evening classes at The Jersey Shore Art Center. Her photographic self portrait collages have been exhibited with Joseph Cornell’s boxes at the Zeiher-Smith Gallery in NYC and she has been actively involved with the multi- national exhibition entitled “A BOOK ABOUT DEATH”. The exhibition was launched as an underground, global art project, at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery in New York City. Her collage works featured in A Book About Death are currently in the permanent collections of MOMA, Queens Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She currently resides in Bradley Beach with her husband David Mulkins. Community Champion of Arts Education Award (Organization) Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center The LBACC envisions a community where creativity flourishes and art serves as a unifying force. We aim to be a dynamic hub for local, emerging, and professional artists, offering a space where diverse voices and talents are celebrated. Through art, we connect, inspire, and enhance the cultural identify of our evolving community. Outstanding Educator in Visual Arts Lisa Bagwell I am a self-taught artist and have been working with recycled materials for over 20 years hoping to spark curiosity and raise awareness of the waste we create in our lives and its persistence in the environment. I collect many objects for my work while picking up trash out on Sandy Hook while other materials are collected from my own use and that of about 10 people that save things for me. I keep my collections organized and sorted and imagine how to use them in a sculpture that suits my sensibilities and works for the shape of the object I’m using. Sculptures range from tiny bottlecap pins to large outdoor installations; repeating themes are marine life, birds, cats, cakes and sandwiches. I find that I like to employ humor and lightheartedness to address the heaviness I feel regarding the environment crisis. I regularly show in and around NJ, PA and NY at galleries, festivals and work with environmental organizations and schools whenever possible to spread the word of anti-consumerism through creative arts. I’ve been building gardens (kill your lawn) and sculptures since 2004 and love creating with unwanted items. I find great joy in building giant brush piles that decompose, and though it is daunting, take pride in managing a popular community compost site. In both my day job and art, I take neglected things, be it a plastic bag, a vacant lot or rotting vegetables and try to build something inspiring. Outstanding Educator in Performing Arts Roy Gussman , Music Director Emeritus, Monmouth Symphony Orchestra Roy Gussman is one of the area's most accomplished conductors, and he has been Music Director of the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra since 1991. Whether he's conducting classical, Broadway, or popular music, Roy communicates his love of music in a unique and exciting way to musicians and audiences alike. A graduate of Jersey City State College and the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was a conducting student of Richard Pittmann and a clarinet student of Joe Allard, Roy is also conductor of the New Jersey State Senior Youth Orchestra (since 2002), and he served as a trustee of the Monmouth Conservatory of Music. In addition to conducting, he is an active freelance clarinetist, and has been the principal clarinetist with the Orchestra of Saint Peter by the Sea since 1987. He has also been very active as a chamber musician, performing with the Red Bank Chamber Music Society and many other chamber music groups throughout the tri-state area. In addition, he is a much sought-after adjudicator for festivals and arts groups throughout the state. Outstanding Educator in Literary Arts Meaghan McDavitt , Red Bank Regional High School Meaghan McDavitt is the teacher of the Creative Writing Major at Red Bank Regional High School’s Visual and Performing Arts Academy. She also teaches the Creative Writing Elective, Playwriting/Screenwriting Elective, and IB Theory of Knowledge, as well as being the advisor for The Buccaneer student newspaper. Her creative short fiction and poetry have appeared in Heavy Feather Review, New Note, Poet’s Choice, and Cicada Song Press. She has previously received awards for teaching writing from the Scholastic Writing Awards and Frank Pallone's Congressional Recognition. She lives with her husband and three children in Freehold. 2026 Emerging Artist Scholarship Program Each year, Monmouth Arts presents young art students with college scholarships through our Emerging Artist Scholarship Program. This year the program awards $1000 scholarships to three deserving Monmouth County high school seniors who are committed to pursuing the arts in higher education. Learn more here .
