- Annual Appeal | monmoutharts
We encourage you to support our ART CHANGES LIVES Appeal by donating to help sustain and expand Monmouth Arts’ vital programs and services. 2025 ANNUAL APPEAL HOW AN ART PROGRAM IS IN MONMOUTH COUNTY CHANGING LIVES MAKE A DONATION Monmouth County faces significant mental health challenges in both its senior and youth populations, with issues such as social isolation among seniors and high rates of youth substance abuse and suicide. The county often sees rates higher than state or national averages in specific metrics like substance abuse treatment admissions. One in five people lives with a mental illness, yet too many struggle in silence due to stigma and limited access to care. Monmouth Arts’ Creative Expressions Arts and Wellness Program was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to serve youth in underserved communities dealing with stress and anxiety caused by the virus. The program has since expanded to support seniors, families, and other adults in need experiencing stress, grief, anxiety, or loneliness. By pairing teaching artists with mental health professionals, the program brings free, hands-on arts workshops directly to schools, senior centers, and community organizations. Through creative projects and guided support, participants explore emotions, reflect on experiences, build resilience, and reconnect with joy, demonstrating how the arts can foster healing, hope, and community. Program Manager Devan Brash, a lifelong dancer with a master’s degree in arts administration, describes the program simply: “We show up with everything—the art supplies, the mental health professional, the teaching artist.” By removing barriers such as cost, transportation, and limited access to materials, Creative Expressions ensures that art and its proven mental health benefits are accessible to those who need them most. Since the pandemic, nearly 3,000 participants across Monmouth County, including the YMCA of the Jersey Shore, Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County, Earle Naval Base, senior centers, and residents of HABcore in Red Bank and Asbury Park, have participated in the program. Youth have gained confidence and coping skills; seniors have found renewed connection; and all participants discovered healing through the arts. But that’s not all, Monmouth Arts brings the arts to every corner of our community: supporting young artists through the Monmouth Arts Teen Arts Festival and Emerging Arts Scholarships, expanding cultural programming initiatives, and continuing to bring free arts programming and services to underserved communities throughout the County. We believe deeply in the power of the arts, and we know you do too. Will you help us continue to inspire and uplift the arts for everyone in Monmouth County by making a meaningful contribution? MAKE A DONATION With your support, you will help shape a stronger, more vibrant community through the arts. THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS! All you need are a few basic art supplies and your creativity. Tell us about what you are feeling now, the hopes you want to express for the future, or create a metaphor for today’s world experience. In Search of Meaning Gwynneth Green and Lou Storey Exhibit: March 8 - May 7, 2021 In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, that resulted in the postponement of our ArtSpace 105 micro-gallery exhibits, we invite the arts community to view work at our all-new Digital Gallery! "In Search of Meaning" aptly names the driving force behind the works of Gwynneth Green and Lou Storey. Each in their own way, Green through poetry, prose and photography, and Storey through words and paintings, intend to communicate personal and universal truths through their individual art forms. In Green’s photo musings printed on metal plates, words are subtly melded into the photograph’s image, allowing the viewer a moment of discovery when the narrative reveals itself. Similarly in Storey’s paintings, words are used as catalyst for the viewer to find meaning through the use of color, pattern, and hand-built dimensional elements. Lou Storey "Two Atoms, Two Adams" acrylic on homosote panel, cast resin shapes, 22" x 15" $60 Gwynneth Green "benched emotions" photo-musings printed on metal 11" x 17" $110 Lou Storey "Duck and Cover" acrylic paint on wood, cast resin shapes 12" x 15" $40 Gwynneth Green "angler’s realm" photo-musings printed on metal 12" x 8" $75 Lou Storey "A Wheel in a Wheel" acrylic on wood, cast resin shapes 17" x 13" $50 Gwynneth Green "aspirations rise" photo-musings printed on metal 11" x 17" $110 Lou Storey "The Hunt" acrylic on wood, cast resin shapes 14" x 14" $40 Gwynneth Green "laid silent" photo-musings printed on metal 8" x 12" $75 Lou Storey "And Yours Will Too" acrylic on wood, cast resin shapes 14" x 17" $50 Gwynneth Green "broken" photo-musings printed on metal 8" x 12" $75 Gwynneth Green uses the camera and the written word to create Photo Musings, merging text within image inviting the viewer closer inspection that provides a moment of discovery. Her artwork has been exhibited in the mid-Atlantic region as well as in virtual exhibitions. A published poet with thirteen publications, she currently lives in Little Silver. Lou Storey uses dimensional hand-built shapes and bright polychrome patterns in his paintings that illustrate concepts, thoughts and feelings; a visual form of storytelling. A graduate of Pratt Institute MFA in fine arts, he has exhibited his artwork nationally for over thirty years. He lives in Long Branch with his husband Steve and works as a psychotherapist in Red Bank.

ARTSPACE 105 ArtSpace 105 is the official micro-gallery of Monmouth Arts. It is located at 105 Monmouth Street in Red Bank (next to the Count Basie Center for the Arts). Apply to exhibit work here . America: Land That I Love H. Hargrove Opening Reception: July 19, 2019 | 6:00 - 7:30pm Exhibit: July 10 - August 28, 2019 Select Works: One of America’s most popular living artists, H. Hargrove was born Nicolo Sturiano in Marsala, Italy, in 1941. The gift of a box of colored pencils on his tenth birthday sparked his interest in art, but the pressures of economic practicality led him to pursue a degree in wine chemistry. In 1964, the young Italian immigrated to America and soon accepted a position with a winery in upstate New York. Art, however, was never far from Nicolo’s personal agenda, and weekends would find him painting pictures of the weathered barns and covered bridges that dotted the landscapes of his newfound home. Before long, the winery’s management became aware of his talent and decided to display his art in the public tasting room. And when visitors showed more interest in his paintings than the wine, Nicolo knew that it was time to turn his passion into his profession. In love with America, Sturiano earned his citizenship; enchanted with Americana, he adopted an American pseudonym under which to paint by opening a phone book, H. Hargrove. As his reputation grew, he found himself much in demand for personal appearances (and autograph sessions) before large audiences of art lovers. Subsequently, Hargrove became the subject of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, which in turn led to interviews on radio and television programs both local and national. High-level dignitaries and celebrities now number among his following. Having begun his career by painting Americana, Hargrove has expanded his repertoire to include delicately-detailed still lifes, spectacular European landscapes, and privately-commissioned portraits. His work is collected across America and in Europe, and his collector base is constantly expanding. Renowned as a compelling visual storyteller, a veritable poet with a paintbrush, H. Hargrove epitomizes the quintessential story of the immigrant who achieves success by following—and ultimately living—his American dream.
